An Opportunity to be Better - Chapter 9 Page 5

Monday was a day of reflection. For some, Sunday's reception may have been just a pleasant stroll down memory lane or an opportunity to learn more about Morganville's past. But for others, it was just the beginning. In an e-mail to Hervé, Vaughan wrote:

Last night, I was thinking about the whole day, but mainly about you and your family. I can wrap it all up by repeating what Gloria said when we headed out to the car last night .... "What nice people!" ... I was most concerned that Paul and Emma might be bored out of their minds and so was pleased when Emma told me when we were alone last night that it had been a fun day!

Not long after, Vaughan received a response from Hervé, part of which follows:

My dad is driving now so I am reading and handling my emails. Convenient.

I just read and translated your message to everyone. So nice of you! My parents are so happy...

... my father will be able to say (and he will...) that he is probably one of the only French non-English speaking
[people] who ever gave a speech in English in Kansas. He probably will remember this for [a] long [time.]

... we really enjoyed visiting Manhattan. Charming city and the tour was great!

I foresee a very interesting visit from you two in May in Feves.

The Torlotting family returned to Houston, and some days after, Hervé's parents returned to Fèves.

Hervé has described his father as an "anti-procrastinator," and that trait quickly became apparent. On January 29, the following picture appeared in the Lorraine regional newspaper, Le Républicain Lorrain.

The accompanying article was headlined:

Fèves-Morganville: the return of the Americans

On the rubble of war, a friendship grew between the residents of Fèves and those of Morganville, Kansas in the United States. This "sister city" relationship, born from helping, has found new momentum.

Near the end of February, Vaughan received an e-mailed photo. It was of Fèves Mayor René Girard and his three deputies, all wearing the Morganville blue hats while standing in front of the Fèves Mairie - the village hall.

It was now clear that Vaughan and Freeland's original plan of the family slipping quietly into the village, looking about, and then going on their way had to be scrapped. The reconnection was on!
