State UNESCO Conference
Town adoption seemed to be the most popular project at the state UNESCO conference in Topeka last week when more than 400
delegates met for speeches and discussion in the Municipal Auditorium December 3 and 4.
The Morganville to Feves experiment was mentioned many times. Velma Carson as a member of the panel discussion with three
others, representing Wichita, Garden City and Wamego, with Per Stensland, head of the Citizenship Institute at Kansas
State College as moderator told of the unanimous community participation in the International Pageant and Street Fair in
Morganville last August.
The highlight of the sessions was a speech by Herman Finer world economist and authority in Political Science formerly of
London, now of the Chicago University in which he spoke gravely of the threat of war again. Russia and the rest of the
world do not have a common morality, he stated. But he said that the cultivation of friendship with the ones who do have
our idea of democracy is essential and that if open battle can be put off the Russian people might rise against their
dictators and save the peace.
James Walters, president of the Clay County Council, was a delegate. Cynthia Carson represented the College of Emporia. Mr.
and Mrs. Gerald Michaud were present, Gerald as a delegate from Washburn University.
