Dear Miss Carson,
It has been a long time since we met at the February 49 conference. Through Mr. Todd, we hear about your fine town
affiliation.
We were all so shocked about the Hedges accident and understand they are improving, but still badly injured.
Mr. Todd and I met Marie-Dominique Falaize, and she took turns visiting us, and is now at Wichita at school. How very
tragic that her father, who was such a wonderful friend of ours should die.
Now, I would write of happier things. I was in Europe this spring, and visited many of our town affiliations. First I went
to La Rochelle, (as you know I am from New Rochelle). Then to Orleans, where I visited the Falaizes. Mr. Hedges let me
represent Wichita at the Jeanne darc fete, a glorious affair.
I was so sorry when I was near Metz, not to have visited your town. I stayed with Mlle de Wendel in Hayange, near Metz, but
we went to Thionville, and Rombas, (Mount Vernon and Weston, Masss towns) but time seemed to fly.
That is a wonderful section of France, in old Lorraine. It has seen so much of war, and they are wonderful people.
Have you ever heard on the Victrola the Song of Lorraine, which they play on Jeanne DArc fete days? And do you know the
Lorraine costume?
I went to Weston, recently and talked in their town hall about Rombas, which is the other side of Metz.
My trip was a great success and a very happy one. Along with encouraging our French town affiliations, I am trying to get
more German ones affiliated. So I am enclosing the materials on it.
Then you will also see that our Operation Democracy will go on ... regardless. Miss Sims is still in Europe. Mr. Todd
goes into the State Departments foreign division in New York, soon. So I will keep the office going along but Mr. Todd
will come in once a week. I found in Europe that we are very important. So I am giving all my energy to continuing our
work. And as the office is here, in New York, it will continue, as long as I am around.
Martha Breasted, our president, is working on the financial part, and we have pared down expenses, and are going to
survive. A friend of hers has come in this week to help me mail out more letters. We are now anxious to hear your
Christmas plans for your little Feves, and all the news of your committee. We hope to send out a newsletter soon.
Sincerely,
(Signed Kathleen Sparkman)
