Mayor of Dunkirk Receives French Legion of Honor
Close on the heels of the announcement that Freedom House had awarded a citation to the city of Dunkirk for its
effort toward world peace came notification Monday that Mayor Walter F. Murray of Dunkirk had been nominated
chevalier in the French Legion of Honor.
The honor was reported in a letter received by the mayor from Henri Bonnet, French ambassador to the United States.
The award was made, according to Mr. Bonnet, as a token of gratitude for the eminent services that you and the
people of Dunkirk have rendered to France, and particularly to the City of Dunkerque.
On Thanksgiving Day, Dunkirk held a Dunkirk-to-Dunkerque Day during which gifts valued at more than $75,000 for the
people of the war-torn French city were turned over to Ambassador Bonnet and other French officials who were present
for the occasion.
