An Opportunity to be Better - Documents

Velmas lamb,

Yes its nice to hear about those other boys, but I want to know what has become of Frank. Because I love you and your happiness is mine. However the scales fall, you must not be afraid to tell me. My sympathy and understanding are bigger than you know. And my anxiety.

The reason that I have been anxious is that I know from experience what his own conflict is and I know that, quite likely, his religion is stronger than you realize. I do not want to interfere, my darling, only to warn you of the unseen strength of the Catholic teachings. I have met up with it.

If your congeniality is stronger than anything, I will be glad to know of that. I will be with you in any decision but I hope you will think and think and think! My friend Elizabeth took the alien road and I am sure she is not a happy woman. If Frank is stronger than the church there is a chance for happiness. If he is not, you may as well face it.

Mr. Templer said to me the other day - Cynthia will succeed in whatever she decides to do. And she certainly deserves a good life. Thats what I think, dear.

Oh we had a most successful time Sunday night at the church - the One World or None left the audience paralyzed. There were about 135 there. And Mrs. Short (the English woman) made a simply splendid and entertaining talk. They donated $40 to send food to England and the Youth Fellowship will bring it to $50. Vance and Dick went to Clay Center for Mrs. Short and I had her and Mrs. Milliken in for supper first and then after the meeting we served tea and coffee and cookies in the church parlor. I had flags and dolls of all nations and globes and candlelight and flowers and parlorish groupings and a tea table with all the silver out and Waunita and Shirley serving - Its the first time Morganville didnt find the table set and at first they didnt know what to do. They eyed the tea table distantly. I simply couldnt make anybody be first. I tried to get Mrs. Short there but people waylaid her. Finally I took Erma Merten forcibly and got a cup myself and had a cookie in the saucer and walked away and a couple of braver ones followed suit and after that several were killed in the rush.

Yesterday I overheard somebody wondering if they couldnt have refreshments again that way. Not so much trouble they said.

You were right about a certain girl playing several ends against the middle. I have just had a sad experience of which Ill tell you later.

Johnny Sawvan has lost his job and they are moving to Manhattan. So are Dallas Nelsons folks. Dan Affoldter is thinking of going to college. Dee is thicker than thieves with one of the German boys. Ernest Hull isnt getting well.

The Kansas City trip sounds like lots of fun. Tell Garrett I said to drive carefully.

Lily said they were planning on coming down for The Messiah and if they do, Barbara wants to spend Saturday night with you in the dorm. She may come to school there. So may Vance. I want to come down for the square dance.

Glad to hear you are studying. I believe in it. I dont want to couch you but I would like to see it spelled with an a instead of a u.

What do you mean spring? We have a foot of snow. Im hanging on until you are home again. When is your Easter vacation? Maybe Ill meet you in Topeka and look at spring clothes.

Be young and happy
