Mr. Daniel J. Roenigk

Morganville, Kansas

Dear Mr. Roenigk

We have received a letter from our Paris office enclosing the attached communication from Feves. We at once inquired into the regulations for entry here and I am sending you a copy of our answer. Do you want this gift sent or do you know of anybody who would be willing to bring it back? This of course would be much more satisfactory as the packing in carton is not too satisfactory and it would mean more expense to have it packed in wood abroad. I should be very glad to receive your views on the matter so that I can pass them on to our Paris office. Evidently the people at Feves are not accustomed to this kind of problem and have asked our shipping director for his help.

It is hard to estimate what the expenses would be as it would seem to be entirely left to the discretion of the customs officers here.

Very sincerely yours,

(Germanie Wilson)

Re: gift from Feves to Morganville

Here is the information we have gathered:

1 If this is sent as a gift parcel, the duty will have to be paid.

2 In case it is an original drawing, it may pass the customs if value is declared at less than 1.00. In order to go through the customs free an affidavit is necessary from the N.Y. Post Office sworn to by someone here that it is an original drawing.

3 The express to Morganville will have to be paid.

I am writing to Morganville giving them this information and asking them if they will be willing to pay any expenses connected with the picture which we may run into at the customs. It seems the only safe way to send it if it has to come commercially is by declaring its value less than 1.00. It seems too bad but as the value is sentimental no insurance would cover that anyway.
